5. The song is a metaphor about two people who are unlikely to be together when in all reality they should be a couple. Although their outside appearance differs, they have what it takes to be a great team, yet because the girl was too shallow to see what was inside the punk, she missed out on a great guy. This song proves that you should see beyond the outside appearance and get to know a person before judging them.

In Keds and tube socks
But she doesn't know who I am
And she doesn't give a damn about me

'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh

Her boyfriend's a dick
And he brings a gun to school
And he'd simply kick
My ass if he knew the truth
He lives on my block
And he drives an IROC
But he doesn't know who I am
And he doesn't give a damn about me

'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh

Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'

Man, I feel like mold
It's prom night and I am lonely
Lo and behold
She's walkin' over to me
This must be fake
My lip starts to shake
How does she know who I am?
And why does she give a damn about me?
I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby
Come with me Friday, don't say maybe
I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby, like you

Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'...

the purpose of the video skater boy is to show the audience that no matter how Rich or poor or how much you differ form your partner is that you can still be together. the song is a metaphors about 2 people who are unlikely to be together when in all reality they should be a together this is seen through the lyrics of the music video. it also helps to promotes her image and identity. the lyrics to an extent convey to the narrative of the music video.

the purpose of teenage dirtbag is similar to teenage dirtbag as it is there to show the audience that no matter of different you are from someone you like or know you can still have interests in the same thing and make it work together this is seen through the narrative and lyrics of the video.it also conveys the bands identity and there status in the music industry. the song is also about a childhood experience Brendan b brown had in 1984 on long island and the music video is meant to represent his experience.

           Music videos

LO: to explore how camerawork is used to create meaning in music videos.

1. they have used a long shot.
2. it is used to include the bike and car they are riding on. she might be singing about being childish or about a friendship as they include a wide angle shot that focuses on the whole group together.
3. they are showing childish traits by wearing bright colourful clothes and by riding children toys which are not meant to fit them while riding down a street.

1. the shot connotes to being in a desert, hot and about being alone.
2. she might be singing about being alone or might be singing about the heat.
3. they have used the wide shot to represent the themes of her being alone in the desert.

Skater boy is Expressionistic
Teenage dirtbag is Naturalistic

1.
They have used a point of view to show how the man has focused his interest on the singer because she is the main focus of the video.

2.
They have uses a wide angle shot to represent the music videos purpose of representing loneliness.

3.
They have used a high angle shot to represent the main singers importance and how she is the star by using her as the main focus of the image.

4.
They have used a low angle shot to represent the bullies as being bigger and stronger than the main singer.

5.
They have used a dutch angle to represent how the singer is meant to be the main focus of the music video and how she is seen as abstract and expressionistic.

they use abstract and shaking camera movements to give the feel that you are there when with the main singer and that the camera man is also there and not just observing it.

shaken,fast,chaotic,frenetic,dramatic

smooth,still,slow,calm,

the camera movement in teenage dirtbag is smooth (naturalistic) for example, at one point in the video you see a mid shot of the bullies as into slowly moves into the smoothly. the smooth camerawork fits the tone of the song because it represents the music video almost like a memory.

the camera movement in skater boy is dramatic (expressionistic) for example at one point when the main singer is on the car the camera is being shaken around almost like it is a point of view of one of the people in the audience.the dramatic camera work fits the tone of the video as it is seen to be taken on a hand held camera while being move and jump about with by one of the audience.

music video producers use camera work to tell a story not only through the lyrics but also through the camera work through out the music video this can be seen in the music video 'skater boy' as through out the video they are seen to use a more dramatic expressionistic camera work to tell us more about the story behind the lyrics this can be seen at one point in the music video where the main singer is seen to be jumping around on top of a car as the camera is being shaken around dramatically showing that this is the point of view of one of the audience as almost a point of view with a shaken hand camera which is refrencing how the man holding the camera is also represeted in the lyic.

Sound and Editing

LO: to explore how sound and editing are used to create meaning in music video.

diegetic and non diegetic

diegetic: sounds are those from inside the world of the text that the characters can hear.

non-diegetic: sounds are sounds outside the world of the film that the characters cannot hear.

teenage dirtbag diegetic sounds: the car crashing into the bike the reason they have only used this sound is to connect the character to the narrative.

skater boy diegetic sounds: spray paint can falling, traffic, smashing glass and a helicopter along with police sirens for the sounds at the beginning it is used to help describe the location without even getting to see it. it creates a theme of anti-establishment.

Editing
editing includes special effects along with transitions, order of shots, continuity, shot duration and pace and rhythm.

skater boy does cut to the beat and the pace of the video matches to the song.

teenage dirtbag does cut to the beat but at a much slower beat than skater boy as they need to see the narrative to happen to understand the song.

both of these videos use continuity.

continuity editing is where the video is edited in the same order as the narrative is represented.

both of our music videos use continuity editing.

continuity: events are edited and presented in chronological order.

non-linear:out of order editing no clear distinction of a story.

skater boy has more cuts as the song is a faster pace than teenage dirtbag and has less of a narrative than teenage dirtbag.but teenage dirtbag has much longer shots and less cuts as it is a slower song and has more of a narrative to show than skater boy.

music videos use camera work differently so they can show the meaning and narrative between certain videos that are meant to be represented differently this can be seen in skater boy which is expressionist video this can be seen through the use of tilted angled shots and using mostly close up to mid shots to describe the narrative of the story and to show how the main characters and singers differ from the average person. teenage dirtbags camera work can also be seen to differ from skater boy as in the music video they are seen to use mostly long to mid shots that track and follow the main singer for a longer amount of time as teenage dirtbag is shot with continuity as it has much more of a narrative than skater boy this explanation shows how music videos can differ from each other using different types of media language.

Wednesday 26 April 2023
LO: To explore and practice exam style questions.

in the exam you can either get a 4 mark question or a 10 mark question

WWW: good use of terminology and you explain the effect of the elements used.
EBI: make sure you are using specific, detailed examples from the videos to support your ideas.

4 mark question

compare how gender representation are constructed  in music videos. refer to two music videos you have studied to support your answer.

in skater boy gender is represented as anti-stereotypical this is seen in the video by how Avril Lavigne
is seen to wear more masculine and baggier clothing which is less revealing and shows that she is seen like the average person. which is different to how normally women are represented in media which can been seen in teenage dirtbag which differs from skater boy in their used of stereotypical version of female characters this can be seen through how the main female character is seen as more of a prize than a person and is objectified thought the video.this can be seen when the camera focuses in on her and uses slow-mo to represent that she is more of a prize than a person how she wears more revealing clothing which sexualises and objectifies her even more.

10 Mark Question
Explain how stereotypes are used in music videos. refer to two music videos you have studied to support your answer.

Stereotypes are used in music videos because they are easily recognisable and help the audience understand the narrative. for example in Skater Boy they use stereotypical representations of males as active, rule breakers and interested in girls. this is shown through them often skating, biking or driving, often in places they shouldn't be (like biking on the roof tops), and filming the pretty girl in the car.this fits in with the teenage stereotypes also used.

For another example in Skater boy they use stereotypical ideals about teenagers representing them as rebellious and dangerous. this is seen through the use of the male and female teenagers spray painting and planning dangerous and illegal events in the streets (like having a concert in the middle of a public road) this all fits in with the stereotype of teenagers being rebellious and not following rules or orders given to them.

Another example can be seen in teenage dirtbag that is similar to the use of stereotypes in skater boy that can been seen through stereotypes used for females and their objectification and sexualisation. this is seen through the main characters clothing (she is seen to wear more revealing clothes which objectify her and dehumanises her) and camera work ( they use slow-mo on her character is some shots showing to the audience that she is almost seen as a prize or angle) used in teenage dirtbag this all fits in with the stereotypes females in teenage dirtbag.

More examples can be seen in teenage dirtbag similar to skater boy through the representations of stereotypical male attributes like strong, masculine and rebellious. this can all be seen through the use of camera work in teenage dirtbag where the bullies are made to look strong and overpowering over the main chracter through the use of a low angle shot to give them more height and power and
